Nursing Gone Wild: The Strangest Stories on the Job
Elaine had been working in the ER for years, and had seen her fair share of strange and unusual cases. But one day, she encountered a patient who would challenge her skills, her patience, and her gag reflex.
The patient was a young man who had come in complaining of severe pain in his left ear. Elaine took a look and was horrified to see a large, wriggling insect inside. She tried to stay calm and professional, but couldn't help feeling a little queasy.
She knew that she had to act fast to remove the insect and relieve the patient's pain. She grabbed a pair of forceps and started to carefully extract the bug from the ear. But to her horror, the insect suddenly wriggled free and flew straight into her mouth.
Elaine gagged and coughed, trying desperately to get the insect out of her throat. Her colleagues rushed over to help, but they couldn't contain their laughter at the absurdity of the situation.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Elaine managed to cough up the insect and spit it out. She and her colleagues burst into laughter and high-fived each other for a job well done.
From that day on, Elaine became known as the "Bug Whisperer" among her colleagues. And the patient, though he was thoroughly embarrassed, was grateful to Elaine for her heroic efforts.
As Elaine reflected on the incident later, she realized that nursing was a journey full of surprises, challenges, and even moments of humor. And she couldn't wait to see what other odd and hilarious cases would come her way.

“Nursing is one of the fine arts: I had almost said ‘the finest of fine arts.’”
Shift Happens: Free Advice from One Nurse to Another
“You care for your patients, not about them. I know this sounds a little insensitive at first but it’s crucial. You will meet some amazing patients. Some of them you may even get attached to and that’s ok. But be very careful. When you work as a nurse for years you end up seeing all manner of sad and horrible things. You see people experience their worst moments. You see pain, suffering, fear and loss. These feelings are so strong and heavy that if you hold onto them, they will eventually flatten your emotional tether. Your patient needs a clinician first and foremost, what ever friendship you can offer them after that is admirable but by no means owed. Even the most experienced nurses grapple with this and it’s something to keep in the back of your mind at all times.”

Song of the Week: Nurse Your Soul
“You can be amazing. You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug. Say what you wanna say. And let the words fall out. Honestly I wanna see you be brave.”
